Keeping in view the importance of Desert Warfare training, it was decided by Genera! Headquarters in 1980 to establish Army Desert Warfare School at Chhor in two stages. In first stage the school started functioning as Desert Warfare Wing of Divisional Battle School since 14 February 1980. In second stage the institution was upgraded to Army Desert Warfare School on 13 September 1987.

Army Desert Warfare School located at Chhor is 165 km from Hyderabad, a major city of Sindh Province, which is 185 kms from Karachi connected with the country by road/rail and air. Chhor is approachable by road/rail from Hyderabad via Mirpur Khas - Umerkot road/rail track. Umerkot is 20 kms from Chhor and is the last major town in the area with international telephone/telegraph facility and other amenities of daily life. The climatic conditions in the area vary from hot to cold and temperatures register daily and seasonal variations.

- 2x Junior Commissioned Officers/Non Commissioned Officers Desert Warfare Courses (JNDWC)
- lx Non Commissioned Officers Desert Warfare Course (NDWC)

| Selection Criteria |
|
The prerequisites for selection of students on various courses are as under:
Officers Desert Warfare Course
- Service 3 to 8 years
- 50% officers from mechanized formations
- For Captains only
- All Grade III Staff officers serving at various levels to attend the course during
1st year of service with formation
- Officers with (B-) grade in Basic and Mid Career Courses are ineligible
Junior Commissioned Officers/Non Commissioned Officers Course
- Junior Commissioned Officers - Not over 36 years age
- Civil Armed Forces - Minimum 5 years service
Non-Commissioned Officers Course
- Minimum service 3 years
- Maximum Age 30 years
- Must have passed Map Reading 1st Standard
- Lance Naik/Naik only
- Preferably Junior Leaders Academy qualified
