Pakistan Army School of Music was established in 1952 at Chirat under the supervision of Captain Donald Keeling, who was Director of Music from UK and the first Chief Instructor of this School. Due to certain administrative and financial problems the School remained in suspended animation with effect from 25 April 1953 till it was re-raised at Lahore under the supervision of Captain Training Baker in 1954. In October 1956, School was shifted to Abbottabad and remained attached with the Frontier Force Regimental Centre. Nine years later, in July 1865, it was attached with Baloch Regimental Centre. The School was reorganized, as a static unit in 1970 and since then the Commandant Baloch Regimental Centre is also Commandant of this School.

At a height of 1200 meters above sea level, Abbottabad, the home of Army School of Music offers year round good weather. The minimum temperature experienced during winters is - 4°C while the maximum temperature is 35°C during summers. Abbottabad is at a distance of 120 km from Rawalpindi with all road transport facilities available for this picturesque town.

The training wing of this institution has been organized into following faculties:
Military Band Wing Faculty
This faculty is headed by a music course qualified officer of the rank of Major along with a competent staff. Annually around 200 students qualify.
Pipe Band Wing Faculty
This faculty is headed by a music course qualified officer of the rank of Major along with a competent staff. Annually around 300 students qualify.
Solo Instruments Faculty
This faculty is headed by a music course qualified officer of the rank of Major along with a competent staff. Annually around 70 students qualify.
